Secrets to Perfect Securement: A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Install a Wig at Home

    04.11.2025

Hello, friends of beauty and style!

Do you remember that moment when you first took out your perfect new wig? Soft, voluminous, luxurious hair, promising an instant transformation! However, the euphoria is often replaced by the question: “How do I make it sit perfectly, look natural, and not slip off at the most crucial moment?”

Many believe that knowing how to install a wig correctly is an art accessible only to professionals. I want to debunk this myth! In fact, with a few simple tips and the right tools, you can achieve a professional wig securement right at home. It’s not just about comfort, but also about the confidence that a perfectly secured hairstyle provides.

Forget the fear that your wig might look “unnatural” or “slide.” We will go through every stage: from prepping your own hair to choosing the most reliable method for wig securement. Ready for a flawless transformation? Let’s begin!

💡 Stage 1: Maximum Preparation of Your Own Hair

Reliable wig securement is 80% dependent on how well you prepare your own hair. The flatter and smoother the “base,” the better the wig will sit and the more natural the hairline will look.

1.1. How to Conceal Your Own Hair?

Regardless of your hair length, the main goal is to create a uniform, flat surface.

    • Short Hair: Simply comb it back and flatten it as much as possible using gel or a thin headband to prevent stray hairs from popping out.
    • Medium to Long Hair: The best method is to braid it into two flat French or Dutch braids running from the temples to the nape of the neck. If your hair is very thick, you can divide it into four sections and braid them. The braids should be as tight and flat as possible. Secure the ends of the braids with bobby pins, pressing them flat against your head.
    • Very Long Hair: After braiding, carefully wrap the braids around your head (like a crown) and secure them with hairpins.

    1.2. Using a Special Cap

Using a wig cap is a mandatory step. It serves as a barrier between your hair/skin and the inside of the wig, providing:

    • Comfort: Protects the scalp from irritation and prevents itching.
    • Hygiene: Absorbs sweat and scalp oils, extending the freshness of the wig.
    • Security: Helps to “smooth out” any bumps and hold your hair in place.

Tip: Put the wig cap on your neck first, then pull it up onto your head and align it with your hairline, tucking all your strands underneath. Secure the edges with bobby pins if necessary.

🛠️ Stage 2: Choosing and Technique for Securement

Choosing the right method for wig securement depends on the type of wig base (e.g., standard wefted, monofilament, or lace front) and how long you plan to wear it.

2.1. Glueless Securement (For Daily Wear)

Most modern wigs are equipped with internal mechanisms for a reliable, but temporary, fix. This is the simplest way to know how to install a wig.

    • Combs and Clips: Built into the wig base. They attach to your own hair or the wig cap.
      • Technique: Put the wig on, starting from the nape of the neck, pulling it forward. Once you align the front hairline, simply press down on the areas where the clips are located to secure them.
    • Elastic Adjusters: Located at the nape. Use them to perfectly adjust the wig size, ensuring a snug fit.

2.2. Reliable Securement with Glue or Tape (For Long-Term Wear)

These methods provide maximum security and are primarily used for lace front wigs, where you need to mimic a natural hairline.

    1. Degreasing: Wipe the forehead area where the wig securement will occur with an alcohol solution or a special skin degreaser. This is critically important!
    2. Tape (Double-Sided): Apply thin strips of specialized double-sided wig tape to the cleansed scalp area (from ear to ear). Remove the protective paper.
      • Technique: Put on the wig, ensure the front line (the lace) is perfectly positioned, and gently press the lace edge down onto the sticky strips.
    3. Special Adhesive (Glue): Apply a thin layer of specialized wig glue to the degreased skin. Allow it to dry slightly until it becomes clear and tacky.
      • Technique: Carefully press the lace down onto the adhesive. Use a cotton swab or the edge of a comb to press and hold the lace along the entire hairline.

💁‍♀️ Stage 3: Final Placement and Styling

Even knowing how to install a wig, you must not forget the finishing touches to ensure maximum naturalness.

    3.1. Alignment and Symmetry

After you have secured the wig, ensure that:

    • The Center is Straight: The wig should be positioned symmetrically, and the parting (if any) should align with the center of your face.
    • Temples and Ears: The edges of the wig near the temples should align perfectly with your natural hairline. The ear cutouts should be positioned comfortably and not press down.

3.2. Working with the Lace Front

If you used glue or tape to create the effect of an “invisible” hairline, you may need to:

    • Trim the Lace: Very carefully trim the excess lace that extends beyond the attachment line. Use sharp scissors and try to cut in a zigzag pattern (rather than a straight line) to make the edge less noticeable.
    • Create Baby Hairs: Gently pull out a few thin strands along the hairline and style them using a small brush and gel. This creates an additional illusion of naturalness.

📋 Important Recommendations: Security and Comfort

    • Movement Test: To check how secure your wig attachment is, gently shake your head. If it holds firmly, you are ready to conquer the world!
    • Allergy: If you are using glue for the first time, always perform a patch test on a small area of skin 24 hours before full installation.
    • Storage: When you remove the wig, store it on a specialized stand or mannequin so it does not lose its shape.

Knowing how to install a wig opens the door to a world of endless styles and looks. No more worries about securement, just enjoyment of your new appearance!
